President Donald Trump has revoked the security clearance of former CIA director John Brennan.
White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders began Wednesday’s press briefing reading a statement from the President revoking Brennan’s security clearance.
"Mr. Brennan has recently leveraged his status as a former high-ranking official with access to highly sensitive information to make a series of unfounded and outrageous allegations, wild outbursts on the Internet and television about this administration," she said, reading the presidential statement. "Mr. Brennan's lying and recent conduct characterized by increasingly frenzied commentary is wholly inconsistent with access to the nation's most closely held secrets and facilities the very aim of our adversaries, which is to sow division and chaos."
Sanders also said that the President was looking into removing looking into revoking the clearances of nine other former officials who include former FBI director James Comey, former Director of the Central Intelligence Committee Michael Hayden and former national intelligence director James Clapper.
"The President is exploring the mechanisms to remove security clearance because they've politicized and, in some cases, monetized their public service and security clearances," Sanders said.
Brennan described the President’s action as an abuse of power.
In an interview on MSNBC where he serves as a senior national security and intelligence analyst, he said the President is trying to intimidate and suppress who criticizes his administration.
"I do believe that Mr. Trump decided to take this action, as he's done with others, to try to intimidate and suppress any criticism of him or his administration. And revoking my security clearances is his way of trying to get back at me," Brennan said.
President Trump’s announcement comes as the White House has been under heavy fire as questions are raised about the claims made by former Trump advisor Omarosa Manigault Newman in her book, "Unhinged."
