The campaign plane carrying Donald Trump’s vice Presidential running mate Mike Pence, slid off runway 22 while landing at LaGuardia Airport in New York.
In a statement to reporters, Pence said he was fine and no one on board the plane appears to have been injured. The plane was carrying 37 passengers and 11 crew-members making campaign stops as Americans head to the polls on November 8, 2016 to pick a new President.
Republican Presidential candidate Donald Trump immediately called Pence to ask if he and others were safe and if they needed anything.
A ground official said, “The impact of the plane when it touched down was rough, causing the pilot to slam on the brakes, and skid along the wet runway.”
Pence said, mud splashed on the front windows of the cockpit, and there was a smell of burning rubber.
Passengers, including candidate Pence, were slightly shaken, as they were evacuated through the back of the plane. The incident prompted Pence to cancel a fundraiser, scheduled to take place latter that evening.
Shortly after the incident, LaGuardia Airport's weather system said the airport would be closed until further notice due to poor visibility from rain, but by morning, the New York, New Jersey Port Authority reopened the runway.
