A massive truck has plowed into a market in Berlin, killing well over 9 people and injuring dozens more.
Now Berlin police said Tuesday via Twitter that investigators assume that the driver of the truck intentionally ploughed into the crowd at the Berlin Christmas market, resulting in the death of 12 people and injuring 48 others.
First responders were carrying off people in stretchers as police with machine guns cordoned off the area. Following the incident, police said, witnesses reported that the driver fled the scene, running toward Berlin’s sprawling central park knows as the Tiergarten.
Later local police said 2 people were in the vehicle, and that the suspected driver has been arrested. The other reportedly died.
Although the motive behind the incident remained unclear, authorities for months have feared that terrorists might target Germany’s famous Christmas markets.
The incident mirrors the truck assault in the French city of Nice in August, which killed 86 people and was claimed by the Islamic State. The assault may threaten to further undermine Chancellor Angela Merkel’s domestic political standing going into an election year.
Her open-door refugee policy of last year polarized voters and fed support for the anti-immigration Alternative for Germany party.
