The Legacy Continues as Lewis Hamilton Takes His Third Formula One Championship

The “Jedi Knight” Lewis Hamilton took his third Formula One Championship this weekend at the United States Grand Prix when teammate Nico Rosberg made a critical mistake handing Hamilton the championship with five laps from the end.
Lewis Hamilton's name now sits amongst the greats such as Ayrton Senna, Alain Prost, and Michael Schumacher F1's record books after he secured the margin of points he needed over both Rosberg and Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel.
It all happened when Rosberg lost the rear of his car into to Turn 13 and slid into the run off area. Hamilton took the opportunity to take the lead and held it for the remaining laps becoming a three-time Formula One world champion and adding to the Hamilton legacy.
Hamilton said: “Yeah. As I said, I’m not the only one who’s been achieving great things in the family. Firstly my Dad, coming from nowhere, he never wanted his kids to struggle the way he did, so the effort that he put in was just remarkable. I’ve got my younger brother who’s seven years younger than me who’s one of the first disabled individuals to be racing cars and again his motivation is to inspire. He never wants anything coming off my success, he wants to do it all on his own, and he’s inspiring young kids also to exceed expectations – that’s his hashtag, #ExceedExpectations – and so hopefully I can be a mascot for my brother Nick. To be able to add to that, to know that our Hamilton name will be here past our lives. I’m super, super proud about it. And, as I said, while I’m standing here, and I’m here in front of the cameras, I’m a small kink in a much, much larger chain which is pretty strong. ”
But, it wasn’t an easy day for Hamilton. His first corner battle with Rosberg set the stage for the rest of the race. Rosberg ran wide, dropping him to fifth. Rosberg then emerged in the lead when the first pit stops were out the way. However, Hamilton recovered second by passing the two Red Bulls.
A safety car was deployed when Marcus Ericsson's Sauber stopped. Vettel wasted no time and quickly passed the two Red Bulls at the restart, who eventually suffered for not pitting. The next race interruption came on lap 36 when Nico Hulkenberg hit Daniel Ricciardo while trying to pass on the inside of Turn 12 and race control called for a Virtual Safety Car. Rosberg took the chance to pit, handing Hamilton the lead ahead of Vettel.
On lap 42, Rosberg found a way past Vettel to move up to second. Things were starting to go Rosberg’s way when Daniil Kvyat lost the rear of his Red Bull and went nose-first into the barriers. Hamilton pitted under the resulting safety car along with Vettel. That left a one on one battle between the two Mercedes drivers, with Rosberg taking the lead ahead of Hamilton. If he had held the position, he would have kept his title dreams alive, However, as the rear of his car stepped away entering Turn 13 those dreams died into the run-off area.
Sebastian Vettel passed Max Verstappen, who had crept into the top three with a solid drive and very smart strategy, to take the final step on the podium. A thrilling battle broke out behind Verstappen, with the two McLarens running fifth and sixth at one stage, before Sergio Perez took fifth for Force India ahead of Jenson Button, who held on for a season-best sixth place.
But the day belonged to Hamilton, who showed the true measure of a champion by keeping his head through a weekend of rain storms, delayed qualifying sessions, and racing to take a third world title.
