As this weekend's Canadian Grand Prix approaches, Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton explains how Circuit Gilles Villeneuve holds a very special place in his career as It was just ten years ago since he took his very first Formula One career win.
“Having the amazing experience I had in 2007; I remember standing on the podium and looking down at my dad and just seeing the biggest smile I’d ever seen in my life on his face, which was a very proud moment.”
Hamilton can be heard screaming after crossing the finish line praising his team for the victory. At the post-race press conference Hamilton dedicated his first career win to his father who, along with his son, faced many challenges on Hamilton’s road to becoming a Formula One driver.
Now the Jedi Knight faces a challenge this weekend with a very strong Ferrari team coming fresh off of a Monaco Grand Prix victory where they managed to keep both Mercedes drivers off the podium.
Sebastian Vettel's win on the streets of Monaco two weeks ago also left Hamilton down by 25 points in the driver's champion.
But the three-time world champion accepts the challenge placed in front of him as he looks forward to this weekend’s race.
“We’ve obviously seen that Ferrari are quickest at the moment, so they’re the favourites, but we’ve worked very hard to rectify the issues we had in the last race, and after the weekend... Attack this weekend. We’ve got some unique bits on the car I think which will work well this weekend, but it doesn’t mean we can’t take the fight to them.”
A win for Hamilton this weekend will give him his 56th career win and sixth Canadian Grand Prix victory, which will allow him to remain the only driver other than Michael Schumacher to have more Canadian Grand Prix wins.
