Pre-season Test: Winter weather plagues third day of testing

MONTMELO, Spain -- As the third day of pre-season testing began, the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya was transformed into a winter wonderland as heavy snowfall and rain hindered teams from any meaningful running.
Temperatures slightly improved in the afternoon after freezing rain in the morning made the track unsuitable for running. Most teams were reduced to little or no time on track with McLaren managing to get 11 laps logged in as a few teams also attempted to set times.
“The poor weather conditions made things difficult all day long – we even had snow – so it was definitely not a normal day of testing and many people decided not to run. We still had some checks to do on the car as it’s very early days for us with this new package, and we are learning things with every lap. We opted to do some background checks this morning in the garage – maybe not crucial to the car’s performance, but still good learning for us,” said Alonso.
Red Bull driver Daniel Ricciardo only managed 2 laps but not before running wide off into the gravel. Toro Rosso’s Brendon Hartley attempted to tackle the harsh weather conditions but only managed to put in two laps.
Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson and Williams’ reserve driver Robert Kubica saw even less time on track as they ended the day with only one lap.
With the first week of pre-season test drawing to a close, teams will hope to make up for the valuable time lost on the final day tomorrow.
