ABU DHABI -- Today Pirelli unveiled two new slick tire compounds for the 2018 Formula One season. The new hyper-soft, sporting a pink band, and the super-hard in the orange band, previously held by the hard tire which will now sport an ice blue band.
Pirelli Head of Car Racing, Mario Isola, said: “Compared to this year, when the tires grew by 25% to fit a brand-new generation of cars, the changes for next year are less far-reaching.
"However, we’re pleased to present some important innovations with softer and faster compounds across the range: including the new hypersoft. We realised that, under the unique circumstances of this year, some of our 2017 compounds were perhaps conservative: the tires we have created for 2018 addresses this, in line with the objective of having around two pit stops at most races.
"The fundamental design concept of the tires hasn’t changed next year, preserving the attributes that all drivers have appreciated this year and allowing them to push hard from the start to the finish of each stint. The new range consists of faster tires that should lead to even harder and more spectacular racing in 2018.”
The color for the hyper-soft was seen at last month's United States Grand Prix where it replaced the ultra-soft tire's color in show of support of breast cancer awareness.
The name for the new soft compound was chosen after Pirelli used a social media campaign giving fans the opportunity to be apart of the name selection process. Last year, Pirelli gave fans the chance to help when choosing of the ultra-soft tire.
Pirelli, as with the rest of F1, has stepped up their game in social media this season, which has helped connect fans to the sport.
The new two new compounds will be tested for the first time at Tuesday's post-season test in Abu Dhabi.
