Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg took the second practice of the Mexican Grand Prix at the high-speed Hermanos Rodriguez Circuit.
The two silver arrows were broken up by both Red Bulls as Rosberg dominated the split times. Red Bull made up time in the tight final sector. Sebastian Vettel was fastest in the final sector in his Ferrari and fifth fastest in the final standings with rain in the closing minutes. Heavier rain fell in the final five minutes, forcing drivers onto the intermediate tires they had started the day on in the opening stages of FP1.
Grip was hard to find, and Max Verstappen was the first to find that out. He lost the rear of his car in the final corner and could not correct the slide before slamming into concrete on the exit. The impact resulted in a red flag while marshals cleared away the wreckage. Verstappen did not return to the track for the rest of the session.
Several other drivers ran wide at Turn 4, and Valtteri Bottas lost control of his Williams. Bottas lost the front of his car against the barriers but was able to return to the pits and get back on track soon after his car was repaired. He finished seventh behind Kimi Raikkonen's Ferrari in sixth.
McLaren-Hondas of Jensen Button and Fernando Alonso impressed with the eighth and ninth fastest times of the session, as both drivers took advantage of the new Honda engine. Force India, Lotus, Sauber and the Toro Rosso finished 11 to 17 with both Manors taking the final spots in the field.
