BARCELONA, Spain — Lewis Hamilton topped the second free practice session of the Spanish Grand Prix after teammate Valtteri Bottas dominated the opening session.
On what was a clear day at Circuit de Barcelona, Hamilton finished with a time of 1:18.259. Despite going off for a brief moment at Turn 7, Hamilton still managed to finish 0.133s ahead of Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo in second.
“The day was pretty good, but it was a tricky one because it was so windy out there. Every driver was struggling with the changing direction of the wind. You’re constantly arriving at each corner and the wind direction is never the same, so we saw lots of drivers going off. These conditions make it very difficult to define where the set-up needs to go. We got through all our running and were quite fast compared to previous years. We’ve got some work to do overnight, I’m hoping that it’s cooler and calmer tomorrow,” Hamilton said.
Ricciardo’s teammate Max Verstappen finished third after having a spin during the session along with a mistake at Turn 7.
A further 0.326s down the line was Sebastian Vettel in fourth on the super-soft tire (Red band). Valtteri Bottas ran fifth with a time of 1:18.148 and was 0.352s off his teammate in the second Mercedes.
Vettel’s teammate Kimi Raikkonen finished sixth and was 0.218s behind Bottas. Raikkonen had a rough session after taking a trip into the gravel at Turn 4. Things worsened when he was forced to retire his car after smoke was seen coming from the rear of his car.
Gusty winds continued to create dusty track conditions which resulted in drivers struggling for grip. Romain Grosjean finished seventh for Haas despite losing his car at Turn 7 and burying it in the gravel. Kevin Magnussen finished 0.064s behind his teammate in eighth.
McLaren ’s Stoffel Vandoorne took ninth with Force India’s Sergio Perez rounding out the top ten after it was discovered that his front wheel came loose shortly after leaving the pits. Perez was able to safely nurse the car off the track where officials were able to move his car behind the barrier.
Esteban Ocon was 11th in the second Force India followed by Fernando Alonso in 12th. Nico Hulkenberg ended the afternoon in 13th for Renault with Pierre Gasly, who finished 10th in the morning session but struggled in the afternoon, finished 14th.
The Saubers of Marcus Ericsson and teammate Charles Leclerc finished 15th and 16th. Carlos Sainz, along with Fernando Alonso, are hoping to pull a positive result on home soil. Sainz finished 17th while conducting set-up work and tire evaluations.
Brendon Hartley took 18th with Williams continuing to struggle as Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin ended the day in 19th and 20th.
