The guards were called to a room after reports of a disturbance and were fatally shot.
Before investigators could ascertain a motive, the suspect ran from the hotel-casino into a nearby neighborhood where he tried to enter two homes but was denied entry by the residents. When he got to the second home, police cornered him in a laundry room connected to the garage. “The gunman appeared to have shot himself in the head,” Lt. Dan McGrath said. According to McGrath, the suspect tried to enter the first home with the intention of stealing a car and to flee. It was later discovered he tried to steal a vehicle on the street. Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department Capt. Robert Plummer told reporters outside the scene of the shooting. "I want you to know right now that this has nothing to do with terrorism." The identities of the deceased uniformed security guards were not released. Metro Police said, “They were a man and a woman, in their 40s. The city of Las Vegas is still reeling from the deadliest mass shooting in modern U.S. History, when a high-stakes gambler killed 58 people and injured hundreds more from the 32nd floor of the Mandalay Bay hotel-casino on the Strip during a country music festival, then killed himself. This recent incident occurring the day before New Years Eve could not have come at a worse time for Las Vegas business and tourist industry. |
