Kimi Raikkonen finishes on top at Silverstone test day 2

Ferrari driver Kimi Raikkonen finished on top on the second day of in-season testing at Silverstone, ahead of Esteban Ocon for Mercedes.
“We’ve been doing our normal testing work, trying different things. We’ve tried to find good things. We always expect more as a team in terms of results. That’s Ferrari: we want to win and keep working. Then we will see what happens. We believe we can still win and we don’t want to give up, but improve,” said Raikkonen.
Ocon started on soft tires in the morning, but during a the afternoon, Ferrari let Raikkonen take full advantage of the track at peak temperature on soft tires.
Red Bull’s Pierre Gasly finished third on Tuesday after having a late run on soft tires finished with a time of 1:31.429 which was about a second off the qualifying pace of the drivers in Saturday’s British Grand Prix Qualifying. He also spent most of his 103 laps testing medium tyres.
Force India’s 17-year-old Nikita Mazepin finished third on just his second day of testing. Mazepin’s time was set on super-softs, giving him a tire advantage and put him just 0.2s off Fernando Alonso's run on the same tire.
“These two days have been extremely useful and have no doubt been two of the biggest days of my life. My main objective was to help the team out as much as possible and I’m pleased with how things went. We managed to test a lot of items and we also managed to do a few performance runs, which went very well,” said Mazepin.
McLaren Reserve driver Stoffel Vandoorne was behind the wheel on Wednesday and used a set of soft tires to finish fourth, he was 1.099s off Raikkonen's best lap.
Valtteri Bottas finished fifth for Williams, which put him 1.758s off Raikkonen in the afternoon after using the morning perform long runs and running aero tests on the team's new front wing. They also ran a interesting double-decker rear wing to the car at the end of the session, which was used to test a shift in aero balance but is illegal under the regulations.
American Santino Ferrucci ended his day seventh in his second day for Haas after running on soft tires to lower his best lap time to 1:33.141 over 103 laps. He finished ahead of Renault’s regular Jolyon Palmer, who set a personal just before his engine fail on his return to the pits after the session was over.
“It was a great day and we achieved a lot for the team. We started with pit stop practices and everything went really well. I was then able to concentrate on some performance runs this afternoon. The soft tire was absolutely brilliant to drive on. The braking points are obviously a little bit later on the yellow tires and the traction was incredible. The guys did a great job setting up the car,” said Ferrucci.
Sergio Sette Camara finished ninth on his debut in the Toro Rosso. GP2 driver Jordan King was finished tenth driving for Manor, 4.3s off Raikkonen's ultimate pace. However he was 1.1s faster than the 2014 Mercedes being run by Pirelli for 2017 development work.
With testing completed Pirelli will now assess the data it gathered over the two days on the 2017 construction materials and compounds it was testing.
