ABU DHABI -- Formula One made an unprecedented step forward in the gaming world as they held their first Esports series final and crowned its inaugural champion Brenden Leigh.
The 2017 Formula One Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. In the final three races across three countries, Brenden Leigh was one three edrivers, along with Fabrizio Delgado and Sven Zurner who were competing at Montreal, Canada, SPA Francorchamps, and Yas Marina Circuits.
After taking the inaugural championship, Leigh said, “I feel ecstatic. It’s one thing to get to the semifinals. Another to get to the finals. Another again is to win and beat 19 drivers. It’s unreal to have the luck and also the mindset to be able to keep calm in this situation. Winning here means a huge amount to me. I am the first one to do it. That is special. I am not sure how to celebrate. I don’t drink or anything: I think I might just go to bed.”
The Formula One Esports Series showcases the newly released F12017 by CodeMasters the official game of F1. The growing popularity of the game for the last ten years has been attributed to its ability to bring players closer to the sport.
Along with GFinity, a major player in the world of Esports, the London-based business enjoys strong relationships with game publishers, players, and the Esports community and has built a solid reputation for delivering high quality competitions.
Fans of Brenden Leigh and Fabrizio Delgado were on the edge of their seats as the final race came to an end, separating the champion from the second place finisher Delgado by a mere 6 points. While German driver Sven Kurner cruised into third place, ending the race with 64 points. Danish fans were delighted to see Mads Soerensen receive a special prize for setting the fastest lap in Esports third race at Abu Dhabi.
Soerensen, a huge fan of four time F1 World Champion driver Lewis Hamilton, may be considered the luckiest of all as he will present Hamilton with the DHL Fastest Lap Award Sunday before the FIA Formula 1 World Championship ender.
Commercial Director of Formula 1 Sean Bratches said, “We are delighted to be holding the Esport Series Final here in Abu Dhabi. The finalists have been whittled down from the 60,000 original participants. After the London semifinals, we are now down to the 20 very best edrivers on the planet, here in the specially-designed garage in the F1 paddock. The attraction to a broad and committed younger generation of F1 and Esport fans is something that we are proud to support and nurture, and we look forward to establishing a season-long series in 2018.”
Formula One, F1 Esports, Codemasters, GFinity, and fans around the world are the perfect ingredients for the continued success of F1 Esports.
