After a relationship that started 10 years ago, Daniel Ricciardo will bid farewell to Red Bull as he embarks on a new journey when he joins Renault in 2019.
Ricciardo will drive for the French team for two years under his new contact alongside Nico Hulkenberg.
Ricciardo made his F1 debut at the 2011 British Grand Prix racing for Madrid-based team HRT and was promoted to Red Bull racing after spending two years with their sister team, Toro Rosso, in 2014 following Mark Webber's retirement from F1. Since then, the 29-year old has claimed 29 podiums with seven wins and two pole positions.
Known as one of the friendliest drivers on the F1 grid for his upbeat personality, the Australian driver will be leaving the Red Bull Racing at the end of the 2018 season.
"We fully respect Daniel's decision to leave and we wish him all the best in his future,” said Red Bull team principal Christian Horner. We would like to thank him for his dedication and the role he has played since joining the Team in 2014, the highlights of course being the seven wins and the 29 podiums he has achieved so far with us.”
He went on to say, “We will now continue to evaluate the numerous options available to us before deciding on which driver partners Max Verstappen for the 2019 season. In the meantime, there are still nine races left in 2018 and we are fully focused on maximizing every opportunity for Max and Daniel for the remainder of the season.”
Although Horner did not offer who would fill Ricciardo’s seat, Pierre Gasly and Carlos Sainz have been rumored as possible replacements.
In a video posted on his Twitter page, Ricciardo shared his thoughts as he looks ahead to the new challenges that await him in 2019.
Welcoming Ricciardo’s arrival, Renault managing director Cyril Abiteboul said: “Daniel’s signing underscores our determination to accelerate our progress towards the forefront of the sport. It is also a recognition of the work accomplished over the past two and a half seasons.
Daniel’s undoubted talent and charisma are a huge bonus and statement for the team. We will have to repay his faith in us by delivering the best car possible. We welcome him to our growing team in 2019 with a great deal of pride, but also humility.”
