SILVERSTONE, U.K. — Ferrari's Sebastian Vettel finished at the top in the second free practice session for the British Grand Prix.
With a mix of warm weather and a newly resurfaced track, a challenge may be presented to many of the drivers this weekend. Vettel topped his first Friday practice of the season finishing 0.187s ahead of Lewis Hamilton in second with teammate Valtteri Bottas a further 0.357s down in third.
Between the morning and afternoon sessions Vettel ad Hamilton's lap times were notably quicker than last year. Kimi Raikkonen finished fourth in the second Ferrari with Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo in fifth.
Ricciardo’s teammate Max Verstappen encountered a gearbox issue which shortened his morning session but his run of bad luck continued in the afternoon when he lost the rear of his Red Bull crashing into a barrier at Turn 7.
Verstappen would walk away but his car suffered heavy damage to it’s rear suspension which would end his day.
McLaren’s Fernando Alonso was best of the rest in sixth followed by Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg in seventh. Force India repeated their progressive result from the morning session with Esteban Ocon and teammate Sergio Perez in eighth and ninth.
Carlos Sainz finished 11th in the second Renault. Kevin Magnussen was the only Haas car to take part in the afternoon session after teammate Romain Grosjean’s car received heavy damage that required the team replace his cars chassis after his crash in the morning session. Magnussen finished 12th.
Toro Rosso’s Pierre Gasly ended the day 13th but ran into an engine issue halfway through the session. Marcus Ericsson finished 14th for Sauber while Williams drivers Lance Stroll and Sergey Sirotkin finished 15th and 16th.
Alonso’s teammate Stoffel Vandoorne took 17th with Toro Rosso’s Brendon Hartley inn 18th and Red Bull Racing Bull’s Max Verstappen in 19th.
