According to Department of Justice (DOJ) a former CIA officer was in possession of notebooks with the true names and telephone numbers of covert agency employees, and additional classified information.
Jerry Chun Shing Lee, also known as Zhen Cheng Li, was arrested Monday night at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York City, on charges of unlawfully retaining national defense information. Lee became a naturalized U.S. citizen and was employed by the Central Intelligence Agency in 1994.
Lee was vacationing with his family at a hotel in Hawaii when FBI agents obtained a court order to search his room and luggage. The agents found two notebooks that contained locations of covert facilities, dates and times of meetings, contact information of undercover operatives, and other confidential information.
Several CIA informants living in China had been killed over the past few years. Some in the intelligence community were trying to determine if, a mole within the agency outed them as informants or agents, or, did the Chinese hack into CIA communications. If convicted, Lee faces time in prison.
