Wanted escaped prisoner David Sweat was caught and taken into custody Sunday afternoon, ending a three-week long manhunt for two convicted murderers, law enforcement authorities said.
The FBI said state police shot Sweat after they spotted him walking down a roadway in Constable, N.Y., just miles from the Canadian border.
Sweat was taken by ambulance to Alice Hyde Medical Center in nearby Malone, transferring him later to Albany Medical Center, CNN reported, where His condition was not immediately known.
Richard Matt Sweat’s fellow escapee was killed Friday by law enforcement. State police said Sunday that Matt was killed by three shots to the head from a semi-automatic weapon fired by a federal border officer.
Sweat and Matt escaped the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, N.Y., on June 6.
