Today, Scuderia Ferrari announced former Red Bull Racing and Toro Rosso driver Daniil Kvyat will become the team’s new development driver ahead of the 2018 F1 season.
The twenty-three year-old Russian was released from the Red Bull sister team last year and replaced by World Endurance Champion Brendon Hartley. Kvyat made his F1 debut in 2014. Prior to that, he won championships in both GP3 and Formula Renault 2.0 Alps.
In 2015, fortune and opportunity came when he was promoted to the Red Bull Racing team after the departure of Sebastian Vettel. Kvyat, hit the ground running having scored his debut podium that year in Hungary. The following year, however, he began to run into trouble with a series of incidents leading to his replacement by the hungry and fearless Max Verstappen after only four rounds of the 2016 F1 season.
Before the announcement of joining Ferrari Kvyat was in the running to replace the retiring Felipe Massa along with other drivers such as Pascal Wehrlein, Robert Kubica and Sergey Sirotkin with Sirotkin heard to be the favorite for the seat.
Ferrari have given no further details on how big of a role Kvyat will play on the team but the position keeps him relevant in the F1 community.
