SILVERSTONE, United Kingdom -- Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas finished on top once again in the second practice session for Sunday’s British Grand Prix.
Bottas set a time of 1:28.496 just 0.047s ahead of his teammate Lewis Hamilton in second. At a point during the session, Hamilton was concerned he may have damaged his floor, but it was confirmed to him the car was ok.
“It was already one of the very best circuits in the world, but with this car and the speed we are able to carry through the corners, it’s just phenomenal, it’s like the greatest rollercoaster ride ever. We worked through all the sessions, fine-tuning the balance and I think we’re in a good position at this early stage of the weekend. We still need to build upon it, but it’s a great foundation moving forward,” said Hamilton.
Third went to Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen who lost the rear of his car at Becketts during the session. Raikkonen’s teammate Sebastian Vettel ended FP2 in fourth and was just 0.460s from Bottas.
Both Vettel and Raikkonen will be dawning new engines this weekend. Red Bull’s Max Verstappen finished fifth followed by his Red Bull teammate Daniel Ricciardo who finished 0.4s from Verstappen.
Renault’s Nico Hulkenberg had a strong afternoon ending the day seventh ahead of Williams’ Massa in eighth who suffered a spin after having a close call with Verstappen.
Two-tenths of a second behind Massa in ninth was McLaren-Honda driver Fernando Alonso who will have some work to do after receiving a number of grid penalties in this Sunday’s race due to the team performing an engine change.
Force India's Esteban Ocon ended the day in tenth followed by Toro Rosso driver Carlos Sainz took who 11th ahead of teammate Daniil Kvyat in 12th. Sainz ran into trouble when his car broke loose at Maggots and Becketts during the session.
“Unfortunately, at the beginning of this afternoon’s session, I was caught by the changeable conditions and the wind during my first run and had a little moment off track, which meant I couldn’t complete many laps before putting the supersoft tyre on. Having said that, I think I managed to do a decent lap time which leaves us quite close to the top ten – we are not there yet and we still need to improve for tomorrow, but it’s all coming together little by little,” said Sainz.
Ocon's teammate Sergio Perez finished 12th. Haas’ Romain Grosjean was 14th as the American team continue to work out their breaking issues.
The young man from Montreal, Lance Stroll, took 15th for Williams. Alonso’s McLaren teammate Stoffel Vandoorne finished 16th and was 0.5s behind Alonso.
Renault’s Jolyon Palmer ended the day 18th as he hopes to turn out a great result for his home crowd. Later Palmer suffered a spin during the session.
“The afternoon started okay and I was happy with the car on the Soft tyres, but when I put on the Supersoft tyres I found there wasn’t any grip. I had a spin and then struggled to get them working correctly. Unfortunately then we had to stop the car on a long run with a clutch problem. We will hope for better luck tomorrow,” said Palmer.
The Saubers of Marcus Ericsson and Pascal Wehrlein finished out 19th and 20th.
